Mercato!

Buon Giorno Our group experienced local life by going to the mercato. What a multi-sensory delight of colourful sights, sounds and smells. Students were able to shop at reasonable prices and select from an assortment of clothes, shoes, handbags, etc. Truly an experience that only occurs once a week on Wednesday's in Siena and we were happy to be able to take part in this event. Afterwards, the art students conducted class in the campo at Cafe Fonte Gaia. Artists have always gathered in cafe's as inspiration points and since we were experiencing local life, their assignment was to capture a still life composition by ordering a coffee, gelato or cold drink and sketch it. It is also important to savour the heartbeat of Italian life and now that we have been here for a few days we have made it our own. Before leaving the campo ( in the spirit of local life and all things authentic) we visited Antonio who for 30 years has been making food with fresh, home grown ingredients ( salami, sauces, cheeses etc.) A unique boutique shop that is a hidden gem in Siena and a definite place to visit. We returned for lunch frequenting the "risalita San Francesco" ( an escalator system that connects us to the campo from the foot of our hotel) We enjoyed a delicious lunch together.
